Senators tentatively voted Thursday to keep large trucks off the Stillwater Lift Bridge.
The measure by Sen. Ray Vandeveer, R-Forest Lake, would forbid trucks weighing more than 26,000 pounds.
While Sen. Kathy Saltzman, DFL-Woodbury, supported the bill, she also voiced concerns. She said Wisconsin transportation officials must post signs about the lower weight limits.
"We need to sit down with our counterparts in Wisconsin and make it very clear that we mean business," she said.
Vandeveer and others who support the bill cite safety problems, traffic congestion and law enforcement concerns as reasons to push for the weight limit. Current law limits access to vehicles up to 80,000 pounds.
