France has given former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar one of its highest honors.
Francois Delattre, French ambassador to the United States, bestowed the Commander in the National Order of Merit upon Oberstar in a Washington, D.C., ceremony. The honor is because of Oberstar’s commitment to French-American relations and in helping establish the Congressional French Caucus.
Delattre called the long-time congressman who served northeastern Minnesota “an outstanding individual and a very special man (who) has been instrumental in furthering the excellent cooperation between the United States and France.”
Oberstar said he was deeply moved in receiving the award.
The decision to award Oberstar with the honor was made by the French president.
